THERMAE Coffee House web site
"God
of Darkness" is Christopher G. Moore's last novel, published in 1998.
Those who know the "Land of Smiles" trilogy will find here something
familiar. And Thermae aficionados can find here and there a reference to
that sinkhole that is Thermae.
| The old Thermae was like a private school, a treasure
of nearly 30 years of memories: a common meeting ground for expats wanting
female companionship for the night, week, month.
Men had met their wives, minor wives, girlfriends, one night stands - and all the grey area relationships fallling between the tiny folds of the established categories - inside the sinkhole that was the old Thermae. Others had been drugged, mugged, cheated, robbed and stabbed. Women had gone from being young to being old working the main floor - they had gone on that long slide from innnocence and hope down the steep slope into full-blown disillusionment and landed hard on their ass on an unfocussed, disturbed platform as far from heaven's gate as one can land. A place of sudden realisation that they would seek but never find shelter. It was in the booths where some 30 years of seduction, sexual games, negotiations, conversations, and disappointments had taken place. The booths were the place of judgment; the place where the judges selected from a large jury panel and passed on a cash verdict. |
